You come across a diverse range of personalities with a wide spectrum of emotions. Sometimes you’re dealing with client anxiety and stress. No matter who you’re working with, you’ve got to know how to turn on your “people smarts” so that you are managing relationships with ease and success. The key to understanding your clients begins with you. The more you understand yourself and the better you handle your own emotions, the better you are going to be able to understand and handle those of your clients. When you have people smarts, you have the skills to help your clients understand what they want. You’re able to ask the right questions and offer the appropriate solutions. You acknowledge their emotions and you don’t let their emotions stop you in your tracks.

Problems arise though when you have a low level of emotional self-awareness. Here are some clues if this is happening to you:

  • You have a tough time making big decisions because it’s hard for you to understand what you want and how you really feel.
  • You’re left confused when relationships turn sour.
  • You blame the other person and don’t see your part in the problem.
  • You have difficulty understanding or responding to other people’s feelings.

The good news is that change is possible. You can increase your people smarts and make a positive difference in your business and personal life. When your self-awareness increases you notice that:

You feel more in control of your life and know what you want.

You have more choice in how you interact with others. Your emotions don’t rule you.

You come across with more confidence as you don’t let your emotions get the best of you.

You demonstrate flexibility, empathy, and optimism.
