Are You Productive or Just Busy?

Are You Productive or Just Busy?In the real estate business, you know how much your job depends on fostering relationships with people. In fact, you always have to be on the lookout for new clients. Yet, continually keeping up a “prospecting mentality” can be hard work, especially if it’s not something that comes naturally to you.

Some real estate agents get so tired of the pressure that they unconsciously begin to avoid prospecting. When their business slows down, they get busy with social, business or community service projects. They rationalize the business slow down by saying that they are in fact working, they are prospecting. If you’re doing this, you might find yourself saying,”I’m really busy with lots of activities that are going to pay off with business someday.”

If this is happening to you, you might actually feel quite productive. Your involvement may be contributing to community organizations in meaningful ways and you may be meeting lots of different people. But you need to be honest with yourself – are you motivated by a true desire to serve or are you avoiding the tougher tasks of building your business?

The key is to maintain the right balance between the genuine fulfillment that comes from volunteer and community involvement and the demands of your business. Remember, you help people tremendously with your business as well. Be aware of the potential pitfall in a tendency to avoid real prospecting by filling up your time with tasks that seem productive but are not conducive to your bottom line. After all, having a steady stream of clients is the life blood of your business. It’s how you make a living.
